Giving up smoking is a challenging mission. Although there are lots of remedies and techniques both psychological and physical, not all of them are effective.
Luckily, there is Zyban which is an FDA approved medicine designed to overcome withdrawals, including carvings, when a person is aimed at quitting smoking.
Mechanism of Action
The main agent of Zyban is bupropion, which features an ability to inhibit neuronal reuptake of serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. Although the inhibition of norepinephrine and serotonin is weaker than after taking other kinds of antidepressants, Zyban provides enough anticholinergic effect to normalize the state of a patient without harm for his/her health. It helps to eliminate such undesired conditions as dizziness, restlessness, irritability, appetite increase, constipation and other states caused by lack of nicotine in the body.
Indications and Contraindications
This medicine was initially developed to treat depression, so it might be still used with the same purpose in some cases. However, it’s approved as an anti-smoking drug, so it’s the main indication for use.
As for contraindications, they are the following:
Seizure disorder or epilepsy;
Bulimia or anorexia nervosa;
Alcohol or sedatives discontinuation;
Current monoamine oxidise inhibitors therapy;
Allergy or hypersensitivity to any component of the medicine.
You must also tell you doctor about glaucoma, brain tumor, spinal tumor, diabetes, heart disorders, kidney or liver diseases, bipolar disorders, pregnancy or breastfeeding before Zyban is prescribed. If you are a nursing mother, it’s necessary to stop feeding you baby with milk while taking the drug.
It’s important to start taking Zyban a week before giving up smoking, as you must achieve stable levels of bupropion in the blood. The dosage recommended to start with is 150 mg once a day within the first 3 days of therapy. Afterwards, it should be increased by another 150 mg dosage, so that you take a pill twice a day with a period of minimum 8 hours between administrations. It’s forbidden to take more than 300 mg of bupropion a day, as it will lead to overdose and severe side effects.
As for the duration of treatment with Zyban, it usually takes from 7 to 12 weeks. If a patient can’t quit smoking after 12 weeks of Zyban therapy, it’s recommended to stop taking the medicine, as it’s more likely to be useless for a patient. Some patients may need a longer term of therapy because of bad tobacco dependence.
Those people who suffer from hepatic impairment are allowed to take the maximum daily dosage of 150 mg unless their condition is mild, which means that it’s a physician who defines an appropriate dose up to the normal one. Also, the dose is to be decreased in patients with renal impairment.
If Zyban is taken as prescribed, it won’t cause any side effects or dependence, but you must be aware that this drug may provoke the appearance of certain states which require medical attention:
Moreover, minor side effects are possible as well:
Remember, that Zyban doses and the process of treatment should be controlled by your doctor.
